lil miss update

hello chickies! how's your week rolling? as you probably know, i'm sick with the flu and i'm incredibly sad to say that lil miss just started running a fever. my heart is broken. all i can do is pray the antibiotics kick in quick and that she doesn't get it full-fledged version that i have.

good news is that she gained 9 ounces and grew 3/4 of an inch in a week! looks like our week long all-night nursing sessions were for a good cause ;) she's up to 13.10 pounds and 26.5 inches. lil miss is slightly long and lean.

she's been eating 2 meals a day but as of today, we're doing breakfast, lunch, and dinner. bananas or apples for breakfast, carrots or sweet potato for lunch, and avacado or carrots for dinner. she didn't really care for pears.

teething has kicked into gear. at her check-up the doctor confirmed that there was a tooth just below the surface. we are in for some fun times, to say the least. one of her new favorite things to relieve teething pain has been frozen bananas. i puree bananas and then freeze them. next i break them into chunks- just small enough to fit into the mesh bag feeder. She freakin' loves it!

claire sits up all by herself for extended periods of time. she gets up on all fours and rocks back and forth. she isn't crawling, per se, but she rolls and then turns her body like the hands on a clock- she's definitely movin' and grovin' and keeps her momma and dada busy!

i think it goes without saying, that the last 6 months have been amazingly wonderful and rewarding. she could seriously melt ice cream with her smile.

Claire's Easter Basket

It's time for Easter!

I always loved Easter growing up. As far back as I can remember, we always got kites from the Easter Bunny. It was kind of a tradition... get a kite in our basket and then fly them after church.

It's such a beautiful time of the year. The sun is starting to shine, the days are getting progressively longer, and the flowers are beginning to bloom.

The Easter season is a time for reflection and trying to become a better person in this household. I hope that with each Easter, Matt and I can become the people that we would make Claire proud to have one day. She certainly makes up count our blessing, that's for sure.

Easter time also means pastel clothes and baskets filled with goodies! Having a little girl is super fun because I get to dress her up for Easter morning mass! I cannot wait :)

So, for Easter mass Claire will be wearing this cute lil dress.  It's Janie & Jack but I purchased it new on Ebay. I plan on accessorizing it with a white sweater, simple bow, and silver ballet flats.
After church, she will wear this darling lil "HAPPY EASTER" dress. I purchased this last week at babies"r"us.

Now onto the goodies we'll go

First stop, a spotted rooster...

Matt got this precious rooster at a boutique and it screams EASTER!!

Next, there's this rabbit hand puppet...
we got this at a gift store when we went on our first date since Claire's birth. It's so much cuter in person!

Okay here's the mother load...

Of course she's getting a dozen books! But lil miss is also getting a new lamby towel & bath toy, a My First Easter bib and bunny finger puppet.

Everything was purchased at Pottery Barn, minus the finger puppet, bib, Sophie bath toy, and the Happy Easter Mouse & Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck books.

I also ordered these Uggs but they haven't arrived.

Can't wait for her to dig in to this stuff :)

Perspective

Becoming a mother has been more wonderful than I could have ever imagined. Yeah, I sleep a lot less, and of course, clean laundry sits in the baskets for longer than I would ever want, but you begin to see what's really important in life.

no source
When I was pregnant I always told myself that I   wasn't going to be the "type of mother" who let her house get out of order. Not that I ever judged, I just knew that "that way" wasn't going to be our lifestyle, at least, if I could help it.

Truth is, I am so busy! Wow. Like, busy busy bumblebee... times ten. I get up in the morning, play with my lil miss, pump for 20 minutes, do my {5 minute} make-up, get Claire changed and cleaned up and then hope I have enough time to do my hair. Four out of the five days, I go to work with a ponytail. Once again, I always said {when I was pregnant} that I would always go the extra mile to look my best. Uhhh... nope, that doesn't happen. I'm not entirely proud of it, but it is what it is people. Not to make excuses but, Claire's in a phase where she only wants me. Only me. So spending thirty minutes on getting myself dolled up isn't high on my to-do list. Mooshing and gooshing and cuddling with my lil miss is though, because it's not a matter of choice anymore ;)

Good news is that Claire is always show-stopping beautiful! When I'm home, she's always dressed in clothes and donning a matching headband. I'm constantly lathering her in lotion and brushing her hair {or lack thereof}-- something that I VERY rarely do for myself.

Along with how things work around the house, the way I view my life, in general, has undergone an extreme makeover.

After Matt fell, we experienced some pretty extreme financial hardship. He is, without a doubt, the bread winner in this home and him being out of work really hurt us tremendously.  To make matter worse, I was on maternity leave, which meant that I wasn't bringing home a single cent. None. Zip, zilch, zero.

But here's the silver lining... he got to go back to work. Yeah, was out of work for 5 months and only receiving 60% of his normal wages was a huge change in our monthly income {that's a lot of 'in's!!}, but that's more than others may be receiving while off of work.

Once again, there's good news!! Matt is back to work and because of his incredibly generous grandfather, we were able to stay afloat during all of this. If it weren't for him we would have had to dig into Matt's 401K to make our mortgage payments.  Scary, very scary, but once again, the fact that we had the money as a last resource was somewhat reassuring. We did learn that we need to save a little more than what we were saving prior to his accident. If you don't have long & short term disability, I would absolutely recommend looking into it. It's relativity inexpensive and it will save you tremendously if anything ever happens to your or your spouse.

Before Claire, we talked about all the things that we looked forward to. Most of the time, they were material things. For example, we really wanted to buy a boat this summer, and within the next five years, we hoped to purchase a small lake house. We looked forward to buying new vehicles and other ridiculously expensive, non-essential items. Now that our lil miss is here, we are focused solely on raising her well. We are already discussing which private school we want to send her to {we've chose to have her educated in a Catholic school} and how much we're going to save each month for her and her future sibling's college funds.

We have both completely reevaluated our relationship with God. We are doing our best to make certain that we set good examples for her so she can inherit the same love for our church and God that we both share. Going to church every.single.sunday is a MUST. To be completely honest, Matt's been going by himself for the past couple of months due to the crazy cold weather and the mighty awful flu that's been circulating.

We are 100% completely open to expanding our little family. Like today. We thought we would want to wait but after the lil miss, we are so excited to add babe #2 to our family! God has been so good to us and if we can just make some super awesome kiddos who will love him and spread His word, I think we will be doing well in His eyes, which is all that really matters. My mother-in-law always told us that "good people need to have more children". We feel that way now :)

Okay, if you read that, you are awesome and I love you! Here's a picture of the lil miss... yes a picture! Lucky you, I know ;)

It's her 5 month birthday today! And in those short {but mind blowingly fast} five months she has brought more light and love and joy and excitement into our home than we could have ever imagined, dreamed, hoped, or prayed for.

We love you Claire Maire, our little angel.

pretty much the cutest thing ever!

Okay, these are the best videos ever! Perhaps I'm slightly partial but you can decide for yourself :)
I'm sorry in advance for the wretched noise I'm making but I'll do whatever it takes to make my lil miss smile, let alone giggle!

cute huh?

Valentine's Day!

We spent our day cuddling as a family, even taking a family nap- Murphy included! We all got comfy-cozy in our giant bed!! I loved every second of it. Claire sent  her valentine to her friends and family via email & Instagram and now she wants to share it here.

After our nap Claire decided to start screaming. Yes, screaming. Take a look!

She's so silly, isn't she?! Oh how I love all of her silliness!

I made a delicious home cooked dinner which consisted of steak, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and green beans. It was a.maz.ing! Cleaning up afterwards, not so much ;)

Hope you all had a super sweet day! We sure did.

What to Buy: Teething Edition

Claire has been teething for a few weeks and in those weeks, I've learned exactly what she loves on her sore gums. These products have become clear front runners in her teething toys, along with some other essential items.

I was slightly hesitant to go these to Claire when they first arrived. Honestly, they smelled exactly like  formaldehyde. But after they were sanitized, they were good to go with no funky smells!
I'm fairly certain that these are her favorite teethers. They're so easy to hold and have a few different textures to keep her gums smiling :)
3. Pacifier Clip
Of course most brands will work, but these are a necessity if your little one's constantly chewing on a toy! Not only does it keep your little one's toy within reach, it keeps it from constantly falling on the floor and needing to be cleaned a hundred times each day!
This has been a huge help in keeping Claire's toys clean. I'm not a germaphobe by any means but her teethers need to be sanitized sometimes and this is so easy to use. No more having to worry about boiling her toys and trying to remember to turn off the burner/take out the toys. It will be used for thawing her baby food when she starts eating solids :)
5. Lots of BIBS!
No need to discuss the importance of these!
Everyone knows about Sophie! All I can say is that it's worth the money! We love ours.
Another Vulli product, and another great product. I cannot say enough about this company's products. This particular one make a lot of noise. Matt hates it but Claire loves it's silly shriek. It makes her smile when she's having a meltdown.

An important thing I forgot to include above are teething tablets. These bad boys work almost instantly.  I suggest getting some before your little one starts teething too bad because they will be your saving grace! They're called Hylands Homeopathic Baby Teething Tablets

Look at her go!

Sitting all by herself!

I cannot believe this!

ohh and I have the best news EVER!!

Matt's been cleared to go back to work!
Praise God.
He's been off since September 9th.
After 2 radial head replacement surgeries and 2 rounds
of physical therapies, he finally can go to work and 'support'
his family, something he's been dying to do since Claire's birth.

Our prayers have been answered. Thank you Lord.
 Amen.

My Valentine

Valentine's Day is usually just another day in our house. We don't typically get each other over-the-top, mooshy-gooshy gifts. We do however, give each other a sweet card and usually go out for a nice dinner. Well this year will be a little different. There still won't be any gift exchanges and we most likely won't go for dinner. But, this year involves something so much better... and that's our little Valentine! She, on the other hand, will be given a couple gifts to celebrate this lovey-dovey holiday! I ordered her 3 new books (of course!) They are:

And it wouldn't be a special occassion without a super dooper adorable photoshoot with lil miss! Here are a couple of her from today! She hasn't been herself lately so there aren't any smiles :( but nonetheless-- Enjoy :)

and a black and white conversion

Happy Groundhog's Day!

Today Claire celebrated her very first Groundhog's Day :) Luckily, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring and we're really hoping he's correct! Since we haven't been able to ski, we are really looking forward to spring. Spring will be packed with lots of flower planting, walks with lil miss & Murphy, and picture taking. I'm dying to have a nice photo of the three of us but I'm not about to take her out in the freezing cold weather for one.

Here are some pictures of Claire this morning in her Punxsutawney Phil onesie

They had Decision 2013:Phil's Prediction coverage on The Weather Channel from 5 to 12! It's the one day of the year we miss home (Punxsutawney, PA).

Finally!

After about 15 weeks of trying and several brands of bottles later, we finally found the one that works for lil miss! Ahhhhhhh!!!!!
As I was typing this she rolled from her back to her tummy twice! What an incredibly productive day for her :)
Here's are some of the ones we've tried:
MAM, Similac, Avent, Medela, First Years

but the winner is.... The First Years Breastflow bottle!

She started out by chewing on it, like she did the others but eventually latched and sucked away! Praise God! Moral to the story? Keep trying and you will {eventually} find a bottle that pleases your little one!
